beta blockers The Side Effects Of Beta Blockers

Side Effects of Beta Blockers

There are possibilities of side effects with any medication including beta blockers. However not all of the users who take these medicines will have any side effects or problems. It sometimes depends on their body conditions to accept the medications and most people will tolerate them well and without having any side effects or complications. In most cases, if the side effects do happens to you, they will be minor and they will either require no further treatment, or your doctor prescribe an appropriate remedy.

Today we will discuss the most common possible side effects of using beta blockers.

You should consult your healthcare provider before taking any medicine, and this list isn’t intended to be comprehensive.

What Are Beta Blockers?

The common side effects of beta blockers

In clinical studies, beta blockers have been thoroughly researched regarding collateral effects.

A group of people who took beta blockers were carefully studied for any side effects that occurred and this was documented carefully. This group of people was compared to another group of people who were taking a placebo. Remember that a placebo is a “sugar pill” that does not contain any active ingredients. From this comparison between these two groups, it was easy to see any side effects and how often they occurred.

Below are the common side effects of beta blockers that were found after the research was completed:

  1. A slow heart rate, or in scientific terms: Bradycardia.
  2. Low blood pressure.
  3. Fatigue or tiredness.
  4. Cold hands and/or feet.
  5. Dizziness or headaches.
  6. For beta blockers eye drops, the most common side effect is temporary eye discomfort.

Possibilities of other side effects from using beta blockers:

There are a number of possible side effects of using beta blockers listed below that you should report to your healthcare provider but are not limited to:

  1. Fainting or lightheadedness due to low blood pressure, or in scientific terms: Hypotension.
  2. A slow heart rate  (Bradycardia).
  3. Minor or chronic chest pain.
  4. Asthma gets worse instead of recovering.
  5. Depression or feeling stress without any specific causes.
  6. Heart failure signs, for example ,gaining weight rapidly, shortness of breath and the swelling of your hands and feet.
  7. Allergic reactions such as getting a rash with no explanation, hives, itching, swelling of your body, wheezing or having difficulty to breathe or swallowing food.

If you stop taking beta blockers too quickly, there is the possibility of having a more serious problem, such as a heart attack.

There are other possibilities of using beta blockers including:

  1. High triglycerides or high level of cholesterol.
  2. Insomnia – difficulty to sleep.
  3. Experiencing the same symptoms of diabetes.
  4. Exercise intolerance due to fatigue or tiredness.

You may or may not experience any side effects when using beta blockers as listed in this article. When you first use it, let your doctor (or healthcare provider) know the side effects that you experience so that they know how to diagnose and treat the problem.

Maybe the side effect that you get is not related to beta blockers and related to something else. Your doctor will easily identify the side effects if you work closely with him or her.

The advice from this article comes from research, not as professional health care, and should not be interpreted as such.
